Tuning tips
Always tune up to the note: if you’re sharp, drop below the pitch and come back up. That takes the slack out of the gears so the string holds its tuning. Pluck with medium force and let the note ring for a second before reading the needle, because the very start of a note is slightly sharp.
A cent is one hundredth of a semitone. Within ±5 cents is effectively in tune for most listeners; the display turns green there. After tuning all six strings, check the first again, since changing tension on one string pulls the neck slightly. Tuning something else? Use the bass tuner, the ukulele tuner or the chromatic tuner. How do I tune a guitar without a tuner?
Use relative tuning: tune the low E to a reference tone, then fret the 5th fret of each string to match the next open string, except the G string, where you fret the 4th fret to match the open B.
Which way do I turn the tuning peg?
On most guitars, turning the peg so the top of it moves toward the headstock tip tightens the string and raises the pitch. The tuner shows “Tune up” when you are flat and “Tune down” when you are sharp.
