| 1 | A4 | 440.00 | A4 |
Hold the ukulele as you would to play it: the string closest to your face is G, then C, E and A. With high-G tuning the G string sits between C and E in pitch, so strummed chords sound close and bright. Low-G tuning drops that string an octave for a fuller bass.
Once you’re in tune, start with the four chords that play thousands of songs (C, Am, F and G) on the ukulele chord chart.
Questions
What are the notes of a ukulele?
Standard ukulele tuning is G4 C4 E4 A4 from the string nearest your chin to the one nearest the floor. The G is higher than the C (re-entrant tuning), which gives the uke its bright sound. Remember it with “My Dog Has Fleas”.
How do I tune a ukulele with this tuner?
Press Start tuner, allow the microphone, and pluck one string at a time. Turn the peg until the needle centres and the readout turns green. “Tune up” means tighten the string; “Tune down” means loosen it.
Do soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles use the same tuning?
Yes. All three use GCEA, usually with a high G; many tenor players fit a low-G string instead. Baritone ukuleles are tuned DGBE, like the top four strings of a guitar. All of these are in the tuning menu.
How do I tune a ukulele by ear?
Tune the A string to the reference tone, then match the others: the 5th fret of the E string equals open A, the 4th fret of the C string equals open E, and the 2nd fret of the G string equals open A.
Why does my ukulele go out of tune so quickly?
New nylon or fluorocarbon strings stretch for the first week or two, so they keep going flat. Retune often; it settles down. Temperature and humidity changes also shift the pitch.
