Reading ukulele diagrams
The four vertical lines are the strings G, C, E, A from left to right as you look at the ukulele facing you. Chord fingerings are often written as four numbers in that order: C major is 0003, meaning only the A string is fretted, at the 3rd fret.
Because the ukulele has only four strings, some chords drop a note (usually the 5th). That’s normal, and why ukulele chords sound lighter than their guitar versions. Hear how chords fit together in a song with the chord progression generator.
Questions
What tuning do these ukulele chords use?
Standard re-entrant GCEA tuning used on soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles: G4 C4 E4 A4. The G string is higher than the C, which gives the ukulele its bright sound.
What are the easiest ukulele chords?
C (0003), A minor (2000), F (2010) and G (0232). Those four play thousands of songs. Add C7 (0001) and A7 (0100) next.
Can I use these on a baritone ukulele?
Baritone ukuleles are tuned DGBE like the top four guitar strings, so the shapes differ. Use the top four strings of the guitar chord diagrams instead.
