Finding your way around the keys

The black keys come in groups of two and three. The white key just left of each group of two is C; the one left of each group of three is F. From C, the white keys run C D E F G A B and repeat, one octave per group.

Every key is a half step (semitone) from its neighbour, black or white. That’s why E–F and B–C have no black key between them: they are already a half step apart.

To play a chord, hold three keys skipping one white key between each (C–E–G is C major). See every chord laid out on the piano chords chart, or learn the piano scales.

Questions

How do I play the virtual piano with my keyboard?

The bottom letter row A S D F G H J K L ; plays the white keys from C, and the row above (W E T Y U O P) plays the black keys, like a real keyboard layout. Z and X shift the octave down and up; hold Space for the sustain pedal.

Can I play on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Tap or slide across the keys; multiple fingers play chords. Turn your phone sideways for wider keys.

Why is there no sound?

Browsers only allow audio after you interact with the page, so press a key or tap once. On iPhone, also make sure the silent switch is off.

Can I record what I play?

Press Record, play, then Stop. Replay it as many times as you like; the last take is kept in this browser.
